Multiskills Academy

Multi Skills Academy 2009 - 2010

Main aim: Provide support for Gifted and Talented primary school pupils.

The Richmond Borough Multi-skill Academies (MSA) are a key component of a talent development pathway for pupils identified as gifted and talented (G&T) in PE and sport. MSAs apply the principles of multi-skills development, enabling young people to develop a higher level of physical skills, rather than sport specific skills. This will help them to transfer between sports as the talent pool closes and their growth stabilises.

7 MSA have been set up, based at local secondary schools. Every primary school was asked to nominate five pupils who could attend this esteemed academy. As a result over 200 pupils regularly attended a MSA this year.

Specifically trained multi-skills coaches deliver challenging multi-skill activities and coaching at the academy and focus on developing the pupils' physical and thinking abilities, whilst challenging their creative, personal and social abilities.

The primary purpose of MSA's is to support primary to secondary transition for gifted and talented pupils, providing essential elements of primary to secondary school transition through:
· Selection based on observation through delivery of national curriculum physical education.
· The opportunity to develop two core abilities, physical and thinking, at a critical time in the young person's development.
· Offers of guidance and signposting to opportunities to further realise their talent in sports clubs.
· Support and tracking of gifted and talented pupils through the transition from primary to secondary school.
· What has the significant impact of your CPD work been on participants?

Evaluation forms after each term indicated that 97% of the pupils and their parents thought the experience had been highly satisfactory and anticipated that the training would have a positive impact.

On the Impact Review Form at the end of the year:
- 100% of pupils who had attended the MSA reported that they enjoyed the MSA and were proud to have been selected.
- 100% of pupils who had attended the MSA reported feeling more confident about their ability and felt it had improved their PE & school Sport.
- 82% of pupils who had attended the MSA reported that they would like to have the MSA to have lasted for longer!
